Port Carling, Muskoka Ontario

Port Carling, Muskoka Ontario

The community of Port Carling is located on the Indian River, in the Township of Muskoka Lakes, Ontario - on the southern point of the Canadian Shield. Indeed, the rugged cliffs emerging from the region's pristine lakes and roads are as old as life itself.

 Places to See

There are many places to see in Port Carling.

The region abounds with much of its original architecture - making it a historical museum in itself. On rainy days, check out the Muskoka Lakes Museum, the Muskoka Lakes Library, and the Port Carling Memorial Community Hall. When the weather's better, enjoy the Ferndale Lookout Tower.

Every other summer, Port Carling features its renown Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA) Antique Boat Show.

Finally, be sure to take your camera to the Port Carling Wall - nicknamed "The Wall." This 111' x 45' photo mosaic is located on the large south-facing wall of the former Hanna store, and is visible from District Road 118 and surrounding boats. This extraordinary mosaic presents the image of the RMS Sagamo sailing through the Carling Locks (another must-see) in 1922. It is composed of 9,028 photos of village life in Port Carling during the years 1860-1960.

Port Carling, Muskoka Year Round

In the summer, enjoy the great golfing Port Carling has to offer, take a walk in the park, check out the stores (many of which are located in lovely old homes), go to one of the region's great restaurants, and simply stroll the docks and the sidewalks filled with local residents, cottagers and tourists. Also, be sure to check out the Music Festival, Waterski Show, Gift and Craft Show, and the Corn Roast and Auction.

The winters in Port Carling are quiet compared to the busy summer months. While many of the businesses are closed in the winter, you can enjoy some great hockey, snowmobiling and curling, as well as the Winter Carnival, Skating Carnival, the Remembrance Day Parade, Christmas Dinner and Dance, and more.

Port Carling Claim to Fame

The Ferndale Lookout Tower was actually used as Ranger Gord's fire tower on the Red Green Show.
