Saugeen River

The scenic and popular Saugeen River Canoe Route starts in the Town of Hanover and takes approximately 3-4 days to canoe or kayak its entire 102 km length to the mouth of the river in Southampton. There are numerous access points that can make for a relaxing day trip on this renowned river. During the summer, this is an ideal river for beginners because of its gentle flowing nature, limited rapids and eddies, and numerous stops along the way. There are three dams along the way where you can practice your portage techniques. It's also perfect for learning the basics of rapid water navigation. The rapids are not difficult to negotiate, but are a challenge in the early spring when the water is high and fast moving. In late summer, some parts of the river can become trickier to navigate as water levels may drop.
