We stayed at Dragon Fly for one week with our son and this was a real family vacation. The cottage is in a very private location with a beautiful view of the lake. It felt secluded yet still in reach of modern amenities via the local Marina and Port Severn, as well there is easy access to the highway.
The cottage was very cozy with a nice family touch. It had a rustic almost frontier living feel, creating a charming and homely feel. The kitchen was well equipped with all necessities so there was no need for us to bring anything.
The large and sunny upper deck was perfect for spending the day. We used the large dock for sunbathing and swimming.
The owners were caring and made the experience welcoming.
Overall we had a nice vacation. Recommended!
Small Cottage
PROS: Nice big dock, good location.
CONS: Unbelievably small accommodation. No place to put luggage. Both lofts are about 3 feet high (something you would see in a hobbit movie). The ladder to one of the lofts is a serious hazard (seriously!!). The building is so narrow that I can literally reach from one side to the other (we have pictures to prove it - truly amazing, almost humorous). The bathroom is not even worth mentioning. If you like dogs and don't mind dog fur then this place is for you. But seriously, what was with the dog fur on the coach/bed/den/bedroom whatever that room is/was or should be? And, last but not least, that incredible walk up and down that staircase from the car to the cottage.. to be truthful, I cannot remember how many stairs there were. Was it 60 or 80? Whatever it was it was too much. Oh, I almost forgot, when I rented the cottage they spoke of an outdoor washroom. The only thing I saw was an old outhouse full of tools half way up the hill?
Save your money!!
Amazing Cottage, Semi-amazing Privacy, Very Not Amazing Owner
First, the postive. The cottage itself is lovely, as pictured, cute and rustic-feeling with good and functional amenities. The view, dock, and deck, wonderful. If I was reviewing this alone I would give the place 5/5.
Now the not so positive. What photos and description and renting agent did not disclose before I signed and put my deposit down, is that this cottage is one of two on a shared lot. I found out about it while reading the welcome packet which made reference to a shared paddle boat, so I inquired what that meant and was told that there was another other cottage 50'+ away and there was no cause for concern about privacy. As I had already booked, I stuck with it, and upon arrival found it was actually more like 20' door to door. Thankfully the people who rented the other cottage were a quiet couple who hosted no visitors, but even still at night when we went to bed we could hear them talking normally inside their cabin. 2/5 for false advertising and lack of privacy.
And finally the very not positive. In short, the owner has the emotional maturity and volatility of a small child, and could show up at the property at any moment during your stay without a clue as to why you might not want him puttering around gunning the motor of his boat, even if you took the extra step and had a no unannounced visitors clause added to your rental agreement prior to booking. If you give him anything less than a warm welcome, he will get insulted, hold a grudge for 2 weeks, delay return of your damage deposit so you are forced to speak with him on the phone where he will ream you and your family out, and then despite you holding in your fury and remaining professional, he will further delay return of your money for another week. (Yes this all happened to me.) 1/5 for abuse and blackmail.
