Property Description
All cabins have a living room with a fireplace, two to five bedrooms and a bathroom with tub or shower, or both. Relax on your porch or enjoy the view from your lakeside dock, where you can tie up your canoe.
Each cabin has its own distinctive name and character. Some were built in the 1920s or thirties by the owner Del Thomas, for use by his family plus the ever increasing summer visitors. Others were built by long-term "summer residents," guests who stayed for two to three months with their families and friends. All of these cabins have a fascinating history, some of which is highlighted in the cabin binders and at the main lodge.
All cabins have a living room with a fireplace, a refrigerator, kettle, plus a bathroom with either a tub or shower. Some have both. Choose from two to five bedrooms. Relax on your porch or enjoy the view from your lakeside dock, where you can tie up your canoe.
Each cabin is unique with its own distinctive character and history. Many of the cabins were originally built in the 1920's or 1930's but updated while maintaining their original charm and character. Pine cones, dip nets, rustic stools or birch twig coat hooks — treasures collected or made on summer holidays, have been kept as momentos of guests from days gone by. Shelves contain the typical summer cabin collection of books, a deck of cards and a few board games or puzzles.
After a fun day swimming, canoeing or hiking return to your cabin for a relaxing evening on your porch, or a crackling fire and perhaps conversation with new friends.
Milford House is pleased to provide a smoke-free environment in its cabins, main lodge and all other buildings.
Waterfront Description & Nearby Activities
You can base your entire vacation at Milford House — canoeing, swimming, hiking or relaxing with a good book or socializing in your cabin with friends. But on a rainy day, or just for a change of pace, you may want to explore the many nearby attractions. Virtual Nova Scotia describes many in this part of the Province. Here are some that are within a 30 minute drive from Milford House:
MILFORD & AREA COMMUNITY CENTRE
Just down the road is the Community Centre. This is also the home of the Milford & Area History Group. Call to view their extensive archives of local history and ongoing genealogocial research. The collection includes photographs, stories, letters and a variety of publications about the Milford area and surrounding communities. The centre can be opened upon request. Ask us!
BEAR RIVER
A visit to Bear River (first left turn off Route 8 heading north) is a must. Aptly named the little Switzerland of Nova Scotia, it is a picturesque village at the head of a tidal river. It is home to quirky artisan's shops, restaurants and a small heritage museum and visitor information centre. The unique Solar Aquatics Municipal Waste Treatment Facility is also a fascinating landmark and one of international environmental interest.
Let the beat of the Mi'kmaq drums awaken your soul with a visit to the Bear River First Nation Heritage and Cultural Centre. Spend the day at the centre. Interpretive displays celebrate the heritage, culture and traditions that endure and flourish among the Mi'kmaq of Bear River and surrounding area of Nova Scotia's Western Valley Region. The Centre is open from May 15 to October 15. A small entrance fee for admission to the centre is required. Phone 902 467-0301.
