Property Description
Come see Otter River Farms and experience life on the Big Otter valley. Explore the Carolinian forest, enjoy our excellent nature retreat and experience the variety of flora and fauna in our giant ravines, woodlots, rolling hills and streams. We are located eight minutes from Port Burwell, in Southwestern Ontario (south of Tillsonburg) five kilometers inland from Lake Erie.
Our "rustic cabin in the bush" is equipped with a power pack for basic electricity needs such as lights/radio. There is a pull-out futon and couch for sleeping (bring your own bedding or sleeping bags) and dishes/cooking utensils are supplied. We have a one-burner propane unit for cooking, but no refrigeration so be sure to bring a cooler. There's no running water so of course you "rough it" with an outhouse. We supply a large container of water for use in the cabin. The scenery, isolation and view of the river is breathtaking! There's also a firepit on site and plenty of wood supplied.
Naturalists will enjoy our rarities, such as the Acadian flycatcher, which nests on our property. Like trees? We have them in all sizes and (nearly!) all species. With some of the wildest country in southwestern Ontario, our property offers challenges for both the inexperienced and experienced outdoorsman.
Waterfront Description & Nearby Activities
Of the 700 acres owned by the Dennis family, 400 acres comprise Otter River Farms. These include two miles of riverfront, innumerable ravines, several farm fields, and abundant managed forest. There are four ponds designed for wildlife. Tucked amongst giant maples, walnuts, shagbark hickory, pine, and tuliptree are many outbuildings, most dating to the 1800s. The land's history is evident in the old farm tools and machinery that can be found on the property.
There are three distinct elevations:
- creekside, with swamp areas, turtle pond, and flats
- middle level, with two fish ponds, tree plantations, farm fields, mixed hardwood forests, hemlock, pine
- upper level, with mixed forests, tree plantations, farm fields, and pre-1900 buildings
Being private property at the end of an unpaved road, Otter River Farms offers seclusion and rural rusticity untainted by development. There are rustic cabins and a hunt club. Tucked among giant sugar maples, walnuts and hickory trees is a modern, furnished house with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, dining room, kitchen, livingroom— and many antiques.
