Things To Do
Given its central location, Humber Valley Resort is ideally located to explore the many sites and attractions available in Western Newfoundland. One hour north of Port au Choix is St. Barbe. The Labrador Straits ferry runs from here to the south shore of Labrador, linking the communities from L’Anse au Clair to Red Bay, which is a national historic site known world-wide as the base of a Basque commercial whaling operation in the 1500s. The interpretation centre includes a preserved chalupa, a small wooden boat used by the Basque to corral the whales.
Continuing north from St. Barbe you travel through the “straits” area, a string of fishing communities perched on the Strait of Belle Isle. An hour north is the site at L'anse au Meadows, which includes an historical interpretation of the Norse settlement. There is also a nearby site, Norstead, which provides interpretation on boatbuilding, blacksmithing and other aspects of Viking life.
Near the tip of the Northern Peninsula is the Town of St. Anthony, one of the best spots on the world to view icebergs as they drift southwards from Greenland. The town is also home to the Grenfell Interpretation Centre, which tells the story of Sir Wilfred Grenfell, the British medical missionary who provided care to residents of the isolated coasts of Labrador and northern Newfoundland.
