STONEY LAKE’S LANDMARK RESORT
Your landmark resort located on Stoney Lake, only 30 minutes north of Peterborough, Ontario in the Kawarthas.
Viamede is the premier destination for comfort and relaxation. With facilities suited for spring, summer, fall and winter, Viamede is ideal for your wedding venue, spa vacation, romantic escape or business conference.
Explore the 165 acres of nature Viamede offers, by hiking its trails or canoeing the islands of Stoney Lake. Or take part in a relaxing treatment at the full-service spa. The resort also features over 50 rooms and private cottages, and three restaurants all designed for the ultimate getaway experience.
Viamede the four season resort for the five senses.
About The Area
“Never did my eyes rest on a more lovely or beautiful scene. The setting sun that cast a gorgeous flood of light upon this exquisite panorama, bringing out some of the lofty islands in strong relief. We beheld a landscape, savage and grand in its primeval beauty.”
Author; Susanna Moodie; Roughing it in the Bush, A trip to Stony (published 1852, McCelland & Stewart)
Just as was described her first view of the majestic Ston(e)y lake almost 175 years ago in the summer of 1835, Stoney still holds a magical wonder and mystery of years gone by. A natural inspiration to visitors and the foundation that Viamede was built on over 125 years ago.
When you stay at the Viamede resort, the splendour of the Kawarthas surrounds you. If you’re interested in exploring the area, we have a few suggestions for you:
Artist Tour
The Kawarthas area has long been inspiration to pen & brush. Our history boasts some of Canada’s premier authors, sculptors and painters, including Susanna Moodie and Katherine Wallace. An annual open house tour falls the last weekend in September and allows visitors to have unlimited access to over 30 artists’ private studios. These resident artisans allow year round visitors by appointment and we would be happy to put together a full day or ½ day trip for you to enjoy.
First Nations Experience
Long before our first European settlers, the Kawarthas was home to an Ojibwa tribe. They named the area Kawarthas, meaning “land of shining waters” due to the many lakes, rivers and streams that intersect the area surrounding Viamede. In recent years the local tribes have opened their doors and boast wonderful teaching and visitor centres.
Festival and Events
The Kawarthas are home to many great festivals and events throughout the year; these include February’s Polar Fest, June’s Strawberry Festival, Summer’s Open Air Concert and Festival of Lights and November’s Festival of Trees.
Waterfront Description & Nearby Activities
Located in the beautiful Kawarthas on 2000 feet of waterfront on beautiful Stoney Lake, Viamede offers many on-site activities, from kayaking to billiards to tennis. Located in one of Ontario’s most renowned landscapes, Petroglyphs Provincial Park, the historic Trent-Severn Waterway and the OFSC snowmobile trails are all at your doorstep when you stay at the resort.
With 250 days of sun per year, you will probably choose to spend your time basking in it. In the Summer you might drift lazily in a kayak or meander through lush forest. If the winter, this may mean snowshoeing through virgin snow, tracking our resident deer. Or, if the weather turns, rest assured that we will be ready with a roaring fire and hot chocolate while you put your feet up and read.
Summer Activities
Adventure awaits your arrival with wakeboarding, waterskiing or tubing. Explore the Stoney Lake waterfront using kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, hydro bikes or a variety of motorboats.
Play tennis, badminton, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Or simply relax poolside or along our sandy beach.
If you’re a nature enthusiast, wander through our wooded trails and marvel at our local wildlife and 400 year-old Viking Oak Tree.
Winter Activities
Head across the lake or through the forest, using our snowshoes or cross country skis. Track our resident white tail deer, turkeys, or other small wildlife through the snowy terrain.
Viamede is the perfect launching point for a snowmobile excursion. Hit the trails at dawn for a full day trip to Bancroft and be back in time for dinner, or plan your stay at Viamede as a stopover in a larger circuit.
At 8 am and 4 pm, watch the Viamede staff feed the deer, and join the fun. Many deer will eat right out of your hand!
When you come back in, put your feet up at a roaring fire with a hot chocolate.
