Waterfront Description & Nearby Activities
Skeleton Lake is one of Muskoka's best kept secrets, well off the "beaten path". Located approximately 20 kms. west of Huntsville, it is thought to have been formed as a result of a meteorite impact. About half a million years ago, a meteor came careening out of the sky and landed on the ground now covered by the lake's crystaline waters. The limestone base of the lake makes the waters some of the clearest in all of Canada. On a calm day it is possible to see up to 30 meters underwater with the naked eye. Skeleton Lake is said to have received it's name because from overhead, it resembles the portrait of a skull. However it is also believed that it was given its name because when surveyers were working on the north shore, they came upon two skeletons resting on the rocks. When they inquired of a local Indian chief who these two persons might have been, they were told that he and his people had camped one winter on Skeleton Lake and when food became scarce the tribe decided to move elsewhere. One mother, with a fourteen-year-old son too weak to move, refused to accompany them. They died together of starvation, and the lake was given its name in memory of this mother and her son. There are many species of fish that inhabit this lake, which include smallmouth bass, lake trout, speckled trout, brown trout, rock bass and walleye. Although Skeleton Lake is the fourth largest lake in Muskoka (measuring approximately 6 km. by 4 km), the open body of water in Skeleton Lake is the largest open body of water in all the Muskoka Lakes. It is one of the most pristine lakes left in Ontario. Many cottagers love this lake for its crystal-clear water and abundance of rocky headlands and islands. It also boasts over 30 islands waiting to be discovered. For the boating enthusiast, the shoreline has an abundance of coves and inlets to explore. Skelton Lake is the perfect spot for boating, canoeing, sailing, fishing, snorkelling, swimming, or just listening for the call of the loon.

Individual Cottage Description
We offer 2 cozy and clean cottages for your comfort. Our 1st and MAIN COTTAGE offers a large kitchen/eating area fully equipped with everything you will need for that perfect Muskoka holiday. This cottage has a master bedroom with a Queen-sized bed, a second bedroom with a set of bunk beds and a pull-out cot, and a large living room area (with a pull-out couch) hosting a walk-out onto a large deck area with seating that overlooks beautiful Skeleton Lake. A four piece bathroom with tub and shower is also included. The Main cottage is approximately 50 feet from water's edge and enjoys southern exposure. The recommended maximum occupancy for this cottage is 6 people.
Our 2nd cottage is seperated from the Main Cottage by a wooded area and a small creek for a touch of rustic privacy. Fondly known as the POINT COTTAGE - this cottage has two bedrooms with a double bed in each. The living area and kitchen area are combined offering comfortable room for four. All appliances, microwave, utensils and dishes are included. The Point Cottage also features a newly constructed deck overlooking the lake along with a propane BBQ for that perfect summer sizzler. The cottage is approximately 20 feet from water's edge.
Both cottages have their own fire pit for evening campfires and a dock area. The cottages share a common beach that stretches along 450 feet of beautiful shorleine. The far end of the beach is slightly rocky - however the rest of the area is very shallow and sandy and is perfect for swimming, boating, canoeing or just soaking your toes. The water entry is very gradual and safe which makes the beach ideal for small children or those in their golden years. There is a floating dock located not far from shore for those who wish to swim out to deeper waters. A paddle boat is available at no charge for our valued guests and canoes are also on site and may be enjoyed for a small fee.
