Property Description

The guest chalet consists of two self-contained suites (upper and lower) connected by exterior stairs. The suites may be rented individually, or the whole chalet may be rented to accommodate larger groups. Both suites have a queen bedroom, private full bath and barbecue. All bedding, towels and dishes are provided.

The upper suite features a full kitchen, with stove, fridge, microwave and water cooler, and opens to a large deck overlooking the valley. A queen pullout in the common area means this suite can sleep four people total.

The lower suite has a kitchenette, with sink, small fridge, microwave and water cooler. A brick patio lets guests enjoy a fine view. An additional double pullout in the common area means this suite can sleep four people in total.

Retreat For Rest

Hidden Springs is more than a place to stay in this area of Central Alberta. Those who would like to come to Hidden Springs for retreat purposes are encouraged to consider what personal questions they are struggling with.

Some will come with a clear idea of what inner work needs to be addressed. Others may find one of our retreat outlines helpful. Intentional times of solitude or reflection often include such activities as prayer, Bible reading, silence, writing, personal worship, walks, recreation and reading from the devotional masters and other literature. These activities stem from the scriptural promises that Christians have held to over the ages: the belief that God is neither aloof nor silent. He may be heard. It is not unlike what we find over at the barn; 'The sheep follow the shepherd because they know His voice'. (John 10:4) In fact, practical lessons for living pour out of the careful observation of creation and the endless interplay of her many elements.

Waterfront Description & Nearby Activities

Guests are welcome to use the trails for walking in spring, summer and autumn, and to explore while cross-country skiing on groomed track in the winter. (A fair selection of cross-country skis and boots are available if you are without.)

A canoe, paddles & life jackets are available for use on the farm ponds or at Twin Lakes during the summer. Swimming in the yard-pond is refreshing on a hot day, or after a hot sauna!

Park benches dot the grounds. At sundown, cozy up to the heat and crackling sounds of a fire around the fire-pit.

You can drive or hike to nearby Twin Lakes. It's only 3 km away, and affords a unique experience in a balsam fir microclimate. Twin Lakes, maintained by the County of Wetaskiwin, is a favorite spot for scuba divers. The campground maintains 60 campsites from May to September.

Other nearby attractions and activities include antiquing, biking, canoeing, diving, fishing, golf, hiking, hunting, museums, and unique shopping.

"Character Building"

Reviewed in

Guests and Friends,

We are so happy that you are thinking of coming to stay at Hidden Springs. It is our hope that you would experience a mental and spiritual renewal here. On November 5th, 2013, Neil White, founder, visionary and builder of this place, was killed in a car accident 10 minutes north of Lacombe Alberta. We have grieved this great loss ever since.

This Chalet is the product of Neil's deep desire to build a space that would “show forth the transforming power of God in a lost world…” In 1999, while staying in L’Abri community in Switzerland (a mountain retreat founded by Francis Schaeffer in 1955) he was exposed to shelter, hospitality and God’s mysterious love. Neil was struck by the correlation between a place that is
surrounded by peace and its inhabitant’s capacity to reflect it. And so he set out to replicate this feeling here at the farm.

Perhaps it was meant to bring home a reminder of those beautiful places and beautiful people that he had seen; perhaps it was to transport Neil back to those Swiss Alps. In either case, the vision was fully formed in his mind long before he began logging in the south bush for mature wood with which to construct the Chalet.

The first guests were hosted in 2004.

Every spring, the water on the north hillside is released out onto the driveway, and we are reminded that there is new life in those hidden springs. And when Neil was at L’Abri he remarked, “If God intends to build character in us over time, then definitely, this place is a metaphor for the process.”

May you find shelter and renewal here.
