LOCALE AND REPUTATION

Snair and Vance Simpson, an ex-Air Canada purser with New Brunswick roots, bought the inn in 2000 based on its locale and reputation.

The partners hired locals to help run it and began upgrading the main building, which started as an annex in 1909 and recently received a coveted four-star rating from Canada Select. Adjacent guest houses include a 150-year-old sea captain's home.

Cooled by shady birch, oaks and elms along a dirt lane, the 27 cottages were sold privately many years ago but the partners keep watch when owners are away. At the end stands tiny St. Anne's Anglican chapel, which was erected about 90 years ago to serve summer parishioners. The church and the ends of each pew are made of local white birch.

COMMUNITY COMES ALIVE

Part-time residents, including many Americans, bring the community alive each year. During lunch in the screened-in sun room last fall, my group was joined by third-generation cottager Charles Turnbull, a retired Connecticut packaging engineer, whose ancestors came to the Maritimes from Toronto.

In 1994, Turnbull published The Harbour View Story, with 126 pages of history, photos, maps, interviews, anecdotes and other recollections.

A summer visitor for almost 80 years, Turnbull said the estate's dance hall --whose floor collapsed in the 1950s -- "was the brightest spot in Digby County." Before cars, TV, planes, computers and cellphones, he wrote, "everybody was required to have all meals at the hotel," which burned in 1939. They dressed up for dinner and "everybody saw and talked with everybody else." Modern amenities such as in-room phones and TVs, plus free Internet, mix with the stylish older atmosphere. There is plenty of greenery indoors and out, plus ready road access for whale-watching off Digby Neck, to Kejimkujik National Park, plus numerous fishing villages.

Our Features

Each of our rooms is comfortably appointed with at least one queen bed, remote control cable television, telephone, wireless internet and a private ensuite four piece bathroom. All rooms are air conditioned and all have a small sitting area. For the convenience of our guests, we offer on site laundry service and complementary parking.

Our Inn offers a non-smoking environment. We ask that our guests who wish to smoke do so outside the Inn.

-- Article by Ian Robertson. SMITH'S COVE, N.S. -- Long after the last trains offloaded cottagers and inn visitors, descendants and a steady stream of newcomers are still enjoying the leisurely peace and pace of this picturesque part of the Annapolis Valley.

Mere steps from where old-style steam locomotives hissed and panted while dropping off rich families and servants at the Imbertville station, Harbourview Inn has been part of a fascinating transition since summer guests first came 99 years ago.

"Harbourview has always been a popular area for summer," with fishing, bush excursions, bird-watching and tranquil walks along the beach and many trails, said innkeeper Darren Snair, a Nova Scotian and onetime Eaton's men's clothier in Halifax.

All rates are quoted in Canadian dollars, are based on two people occupying the room or suite, and include full breakfast. There is a charge of $20 for each additional person staying in the same suite. Please add 15% Sales Tax.

All of our rooms are non-smoking environments. We ask that our guests who wish to smoke, do so outside the Harbourview Inn. We provide ashtrays for your convenience.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of our small size, cancellations affect us significantly. Therefore, we adhere to a strict policy.
To cancel or change a reservation, please give us at least 72 hours notice prior to check-in of 2:00 PM on the day of your arrival in order to avoid being charged for your room. No refunds will be given for an early departure. We highly recommend travel insurance.

At the time of making a reservation, we require a deposit of $25 per day of your stay. This deposit, minus a $10 transaction fee, is refundable as long as the reservation is cancelled at least seven days prior to check-in time.
